This film is a biopic about two great French Symbolist poets, Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud, with most of its content based on true historical records. In 1871, the 17-year-old poet Rimbaud (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) accepted the invitation of the already famous poet Verlaine (played by David Thewlis) to move to Paris. At the time, Verlaine was married, and his wife came from a wealthy family. However, he became infatuated with the arrogant, eccentric, and rebellious Rimbaud. He abandoned his wife and wandered with Rimbaud to London, living together in a life of indulgence and poverty. During their tumultuous two years of cohabitation, they chased each other, hurt one another, and had endless disputes. In 1873, during their final argument, Verlaine shot and wounded Rimbaud, leading to his arrest and a two-year prison sentence. Afterward, Rimbaud returned home alone, living a wandering life and going through many hardships, even engaging in arms trafficking, until he ultimately died at the age of 37 in Marseille.
