Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) is an old woodcarver who loves to tell children a story about a dragon that lives in the dense jungles of the Pacific Northwest. Mr. Meacham claims he has witnessed the dragon's existence. His daughter Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), however, scoffs at this story that her father has told a million times, believing it to be nothing but his fanciful imagination. One day, Grace encounters a boy named Peter (Oakes Fegley), who tells her that he has no family or home, and his only friend is a dragon named Elliott. Peter's description reminds Grace of her father's stories, as there are striking similarities. To validate Peter's words, Grace embarks on a journey to find the dragon.
