In the summer of 1865 in Kyoto, the new Shinsengumi, established by the Tokugawa shogunate with strict regulations, is selecting new members. Lower-ranking samurai Tashiro Hyōzō (played by Tadanobu Asano) and the handsome youth Kanna Sōsaburō (played by Ryūhei Matsuda) are chosen for their outstanding swordsmanship. Upon joining the team, Kanna quickly executes the order to eliminate members who violate the laws. Rumors circulate within the team that Kanna and Tashiro are a couple, while Kanna also maintains an ambiguous relationship with another member, Yōzawa Tōjirō. Soon, Tōjirō is murdered, and Yamazaki, who had taken Kanna to entertainment venues, is also attacked. The leaders of the Shinsengumi, Kondo and Hijikata (played by Takeshi Kitano), identify Tashiro as the killer based on a short knife left at the scene and order Kanna to hunt down Tashiro. However, in reality, all the deaths have been meticulously planned by Kanna, whose beauty has already thrown the entire Shinsengumi into chaos.
