In Frankfurt in 1946, a group of Jewish survivors who escaped the Nazi Holocaust dream of starting anew in America. The eloquent David gathers his friends to take advantage of this difficult time and showcase his persuasive talent to make a fortune off the Germans. Just as the funds are about to be raised and a bright future is within reach, David is suspected of being a Nazi collaborator and called in for questioning. He spins tales of his past that are elaborate and seamless, but is it all just to escape suspicion, or is he hiding a darker truth? This is the latest absurd and satirical social comedy from renowned German director Sam Garbarski, following "Spring in the Hole." The film is adapted from the works of German-Jewish novelist Michel Bergmann, with characters inspired by the real-life experiences of the author’s friends and family, deeply delving into a group rarely discussed in World War II narratives—the Jews who continued to live in Germany after the Holocaust. Instead of a mournful indictment of the post-war trauma, it responds with light-hearted self-mockery and absurd German humor to the painful history that is hard to articulate. If life is unbearable, then let’s decorate it with light lies.
