Chris Gardner (Will Smith) invests all his savings in a high-tech medical device and tries to sell it to hospitals, but its high price means few accept it. Despite his efforts, he cannot provide a good living environment for his wife and son, and his wife (Thandie Newton) ultimately chooses to leave.
