Based on the novel of the same name by Xu Guixiang. The blacksmith's son, Shi Pingyang, joins the artillery unit to fulfill his father's wishes. His enthusiasm endears him to Battalion Commander Zhuang Bichuan, while the old squad leader Li Sihu appreciates Shi Pingyang's fighting spirit. Li Sihu is a technical expert and is very strict with training the new soldiers, who progress quickly. He regards Shi Pingyang as his successor and aims to pass on all his experience before retiring, even going so far as to feign illness to let Shi Pingyang complete training tasks independently. Shi Pingyang improves rapidly and is awarded third-class merit at the end of the year. The female soldier Zhang Mei, who enlisted with him, also sees him in a new light. The training unit recruits top candidates, allowing them to take the military academy entrance exam to become officers. The battalion commander worries that Shi Pingyang's absence during the competition will affect their score, so he transfers Wang Beifeng, who enlisted with Shi Pingyang, to the training unit. This opportunity lost leaves Shi Pingyang puzzled. After his father's death, the instructor suggests he return home to make arrangements, but halfway there, he recalls his father's wishes and resolutely returns to the unit. Li Sihu is discharged, and Shi Pingyang takes over as squad leader, inheriting all his predecessor's good traditions—loving his men, artillery, and the unit, while continually refining his skills. Wang Beifeng and Zhang Mei, who enlisted at the same time, enter the military academy, while Shi Pingyang remains a squad leader. When the platoon leader is reassigned, Shi Pingyang serves as acting platoon leader, having been in the military for eight years at this point. To retain him, the regiment encourages him to prepare for the military academy exam. Just then, new soldier Liu Fazhan submits a seriously misleading complaint letter that costs him the chance to attend the military academy. As Shi Pingyang prepares for discharge, Vice Battalion Commander Zhuang Bichuan, reluctant to see him leave, picks him up from the station, and the regiment's party committee specially decides to keep him. Shi Pingyang returns to the platoon, where he trains and demands more from Liu Fazhan, who feels deeply guilty. A few years later, Staff Officer Wang Beifeng visits the unit for inspections and is touched to see Shi Pingyang still a sergeant. During military exercises in the group army, Shi Pingyang commands the artillery group’s accurate firing, earning admiration from the leaders and commanders. Although the artillery he has operated for years is replaced by new models, he reluctantly embraces the change and immediately starts learning with his comrades to master the new artillery and face new challenges. Soon, Shi Pingyang is promoted to lieutenant and platoon leader.
