This film tells the story of Zhang Side, a model soldier of the People's Liberation Army of China. During the late stage of the Anti-Japanese War, Yan'an was in the midst of an enthusiastic production movement. Zhang Side (played by Wu Jun), a diligent service soldier, is honest and unassuming, never seeking recognition for his good deeds, working hard and selflessly dedicating himself to the cause of the Chinese revolution. During a choir performance, Chairman Mao Zedong (played by Tang Guoqiang) noticed this simple and earnest soldier. In subsequent encounters, Chairman Mao summarized Zhang Side's greatest flaw—his lack of eloquence—while also stating that it was his greatest virtue. To address the winter heating issue for central agencies, in 1944, Zhang Side led a team to produce charcoal in Ansai County. During a charcoal-burning operation, the kiln suddenly collapsed, and Zhang Side unfortunately lost his life.
