This film is based on a true story and was nominated for the American Teen Choice Awards. In 1930s Texas, African Americans were deprived of the right to vote and faced segregation and discrimination in employment, justice, military service, and marriage. Mel Tolson (played by Denzel Washington) aims to inspire his fellow citizens to take action. He establishes the first debate team at a black high school.
