Jon (Domhnall Gleeson) is a music-loving young man who accidentally joins a somewhat neurotic underground band, led by the eccentric and talented frontman Frank (Michael Fassbender), who always wears a large head costume. Jon follows the band to a remote cabin in Ireland to record an album, where they lead an almost isolated life. Over the past year, Jon has secretly been posting videos of their lives on social media. Eventually, the band's unique experiences catch the attention of a music festival organizer, and Jon convinces the members to travel to the United States to participate in the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in hopes of gaining fame. This film is based on the memoirs of Jon Ronson. The band leader Frank is inspired by Chris Sievey, who was immensely popular in the 1980s as a humorous actor known for his comedic character "Frank Sidebottom." Frank also reflects the influences of unconventional musicians like Daniel Johnston and Captain Beefheart.
