Anthony Di (Karina Lombard) lives a life of dependence with her brother Daniel (Ben Thomas) and their mother Annette (Rachel Ward). The immense pressure of life and their strained financial situation lead Annette to ultimately choose to marry a cold-hearted British businessman. A slave uprising takes Daniel's young life, and Annette, unable to cope with the blow, goes mad. In light of this, Anthony Di's stepfather takes care of Anthony Di and her mother before returning to England, never to be heard from again. As Anthony Di grows up, she accepts the marriage arranged by her stepfather in order to inherit his fortune. However, the traumatic experiences of her childhood leave her with deep emotional scars, making her almost pathologically fearful of her husband's betrayal and abandonment. Yet, the more she fears something, the more it comes true. When Anthony Di discovers her husband's affair with their black maid, she breaks down.
