The mysterious and open Golden Triangle region is located at the intersection of Indochina's three countries, and is an area with no governance. In 1954, the Taiwanese authorities responded to a UN resolution and ordered the withdrawal of the Nationalist army stranded in the Golden Triangle. However, at least 110,000 Nationalist troops and their families remained here. Lieutenant Fan Long (played by Tony Leung) escapes from a prisoner camp and, after numerous hardships, returns to the Nationalist army camp. Soldier Ah Ding (played by Jimmy Lin) also returns to the unit, and veteran Lao Xie (played by Ng Man-tat) offers brotherly care to Ah Ding, who has lost his comrades. Nationalist Commander He (played by Ke Junxiong) negotiates with the Burmese side in an attempt to surrender, while Fan Long devises a plan to preserve some weapons. The Burmese side, however, seeks to annihilate the Nationalist forces, and it is due to Fan Long that the Nationalists manage to break through. Nevertheless, divisions quickly arise within the ranks, with Fan Long and others joining bandits, while Commander He leads the remaining forces to surrender to the Thai government. The Nationalist troops stranded in the Golden Triangle engage in a desperate struggle for survival...
