British-Filipino debut director Paris Zarcilla made a stunning impression with "The Evil Grace," which won the SXSW Jury Award and the Thunderbird Rising Star Award for Best First Feature. The film tells the story of a Filipina domestic worker who, lacking documentation, can only covertly bring her daughter along while working illegally throughout London. After getting a job at a creepy suburban mansion from a new employer, she sneaks her daughter into the house. However, the mischievous daughter disregards warnings and wanders around, inadvertently about to open Pandora’s box. The director critiques the plight of foreign migrant workers from his own immigrant perspective, hiding this critique within an evil, thrilling dark Gothic aesthetic, imbued with a mysterious tension reminiscent of the fairy tale "Bluebeard." The relationships between characters and the plot development are unpredictable; until the end, it is unclear who will live and who will die.
