In 1938, the iron hoof of the Japanese army trampled on the land of China, while the Wu residence in the Jiangnan water town lived an isolated and carefree life, like a source of peach blossoms. On the day of Mrs. Wu's (Luo Yan) 40th birthday celebration, her friend Mrs. Kang faces a life-threatening childbirth. Mrs. Wu hastens to her friend's side and unexpectedly encounters the foreign doctor Andrew (Willem Dafoe). Ignoring the biases of traditional Chinese beliefs, Andrew uses Western medicine to bring Mrs. Kang back from the brink of death. Soon, the Wu residence invites Andrew to teach the young master Wu Fengmu (Zhao Yaohan) Western studies.
