Employees of GLOBAL, Steve Butler (played by Matt Damon) and Sue Thomason (played by Frances McDormand), are sent to a small town that relies on agriculture but is rich in natural gas resources, attempting to persuade the local residents to work with GLOBAL to extract the gas, which would also revitalize the local economy. Steve initially thinks this will be a straightforward matter but faces opposition from a high school science teacher, Frank (played by Hal Holbrook), who insists that the entire town should vote on whether to start gas extraction. The sudden appearance of a young man, Dustin Noble (played by John Krasinski), from the environmental organization "Athena," amplifies the local people's resistance by citing damage to his hometown caused by oil and gas extraction. A local woman, Alice (played by Rosemarie DeWitt), whom Steve has feelings for, also seems to lose trust in him. Will Steve be able to complete the company's mission successfully?
