In 1957, French actress Emmanuelle Riva came to Hiroshima, Japan, to shoot a film promoting peace, where she met a local architect, Eiji Okada. In their brief time together, they forgot their respective married statuses and developed an all-consuming affair. However, due to the unique history of Hiroshima, during their passionate embraces, the actress often recalled horrific images of war, and the architect reminded her of her love for a German soldier during the occupation of her small town in France. After the filming concluded, the tormented actress felt that the only thing she could do was to surrender herself more completely to the architect during their limited time together.
