In New York City in 1953, exterminator Bill (played by Peter Weller) is engaged in lonely personal writing, known only to two friends. Bill's wife Joan (played by Judy Davis) is addicted to injecting insecticide, and Bill visits detox doctor Benway for her. Soon, he is summoned by the narcotics division, where he encounters a talking bug that reveals Bill's true identity as a spy. In a panic, Bill flees home and accidentally shoots his wife. He must follow the bizarre creature's directions to seek refuge in the "Interzone" in the Middle East. There, the local meat market owner, an American writer with a wife resembling Joan, a gay businessman, and a woman at the market all seem to be part of a conspiracy. With the help of his talking typewriter "Clark Nova," Bill attempts to write and gets closer to the truth of the conspiracy. After losing Joan once again, Bill discovers a connection between the Interzone and Dr. Benway. This film won the Best Actress award at the 1993 London Film Festival and several honors including Best Director and Best Cinematography at the 1992 Genie Awards in Canada.
