Nigel (played by Hugh Grant) is stuck in a seven-year itch marriage. He and his wife Fiona (played by Kristin Scott Thomas) decide to take a cruise to India in an attempt to mend their troubled relationship. On the ship, he encounters the paralyzed writer Oscar (played by Peter Coyote) and his beautiful wife Mimi (played by Emmanuelle Seigner). Oscar seems intent on revealing his unusual relationship with Mimi to the stranger Nigel. Initially, when Oscar met Mimi, they were passionately in love, their desires burning fiercely. However, Mimi's captivating charm only captivated Oscar for a short time. He began to grow weary; despite Mimi's sacrifices for him, including an abortion and a hysterectomy, Oscar cruelly pushed her away. After an accident, lying in a hospital, Oscar was shocked to find Mimi standing by his bedside, furiously dragging him out of it, leaving Oscar permanently disabled. They continue to live together. Mimi never stopped abusing Oscar, yet they were still in love. When Mimi meets Fiona, a strange spark ignites between them, and they dance together. In the end, however, Oscar pulls the trigger on Mimi.
