Eli (John C. Reilly) and Charlie (Joaquin Phoenix) are a pair of assassin brothers. One day, they receive a mission to assassinate a gold prospector. So, the two men quickly travel from Oregon to San Francisco. Along the way, they encounter a number of troubles, but they manage to resolve each one through their intelligence and courage, eventually arriving at their destination safely. When they meet their target, they discover that the man named Warm (Riz Ahmed) is a chemist who has invented a miraculous potion that helps people find gold mines more quickly. Weighing their options, Eli and Charlie immediately decide to quit their assassin jobs and become prospectors, only to realize that they pay a heavy price for this reckless decision.
