A classic directed by Mihalis Kakogiannis, set in the remote countryside of Crete, Greece. Young British writer Allan Bates has not written for a long time, and after meeting the wise Greek peasant Anthony Quinn and seeing him wholeheartedly engaged in life, he decides to rediscover the cultural treasures left by his ancestors. The film is beautifully crafted and entertaining, with a vibrant performance by Anthony Quinn that poignantly captures the friendship between two men of different classes and personalities. It won three Academy Awards including Best Black-and-White Cinematography, and was later adapted into a Broadway stage play.
