Alex (Ewan McGregor), David (Christopher Eccleston), and Juliet (Kerry Fox) are three friends living together in an apartment. When they look for a new flatmate, they ask various bizarre questions and have a lot of fun. Eventually, at Juliet's insistence, they take in a single man named Hugo who writes. However, not long after moving in, Hugo dies in the apartment, and the panicked trio discovers a box containing a large sum of cash. Tempted by the money, they quietly dismember and bury Hugo. With the cash in hand, Alex and Juliet are thriving, but accountant David is consumed with anxiety. Eventually, after the two spend the money frivolously, David snaps and moves the money box to the attic for safekeeping. Meanwhile, two thieves are on a violent spree looking for the money box and break into the trio's apartment. In a sudden turn, David manages to kill one of the thieves, but at this point, he becomes increasingly neurotic, pushing things toward a more dangerous direction...
