A young French girl, Marie (played by Edna Purviance), falls in love with a young man named John (played by Carl Miller), but their romance is opposed by their families. As a result, John and Marie plan to elope to Paris. However, on the night they are supposed to meet, John's father tragically passes away, and John is unable to keep the appointment. Marie believes John has changed his mind and sets off for Paris alone, filled with sadness and pain. Years pass, and Marie becomes the mistress of a wealthy man named Pierre (played by Adolphe Menjou), living a life of indulgence. One day, she unexpectedly reunites with John on the street, who is now an obscure painter, but their feelings for each other spark back to life. However, John's mother does not believe in Marie's love for her son and tries her best to separate them.
