M (Rooney Mara) and C (Casey Affleck) are a loving couple. In a car accident, C tragically dies, leaving the heartbroken M alone in this world. However, C does not truly leave; he remains in the form of a spirit in the house they shared, silently and tenderly watching over the movements of his beloved. C's departure plunges M into despair and suffering; she cries, becomes depressed, and withdraws, as if living in a vacuum. M decides to move out of the house, but C cannot leave; he can only continue to wait. Supporting C is a note M once left in a crack in the wall. New tenants come and go, while infinite time passes endlessly. One day, the demolition team tears down the house where C resides, and amidst the ruins, C discovers that he is not the only one trapped in endless waiting.
