An Eighth Route Army soldier captured a strategic attack map from the Japanese army, but unfortunately was severely injured. He had to hand over the map to his farmer brother, Er Zhu, and asked him to rush to the train station to deliver the map to their comrades. Meanwhile, Qin Gui (played by Huang Hong) from Northeast China was assigned by the storekeeper to receive the map at the train station. On the other hand, the aspiring Eighth Route Army recruit, a cotton picker known as Lao Yao (played by Wei Zongwan), and his young uncle Shun Zi (played by Zhao Liang) were searching for the Eighth Route Army unit. The uncle and nephew stumbled upon a storyteller (played by Xu Yukun) who was skilled at imitation while in a teahouse. The three of them saved the already-injured Er Zhu from the gunfire led by Japanese officer Sasaki Ichiro (played by Sun Min), and the storyteller replaced Er Zhu for the map handover, while Lao Yao and Shun Zi ran wildly to divert Sasaki's team. At the train station, Qin Gui mistook the storyteller for the Eighth Route Army liaison and refused to let go; shortly after, when Lao Yao and Shun Zi briefly reunited, the four were once again scattered by the Japanese army's artillery fire. Qin Gui, Lao Yao, and the storyteller got trapped in a cellar, while Shun Zi went to the neighboring village to bring villagers to aid them.
