Four university students come to Lantau Island for climbing and spend the night in a temple in the mountains. Hosted by a young monk (played by Leslie Cheung), the students chat with the master of the temple all night, discovering that the lives of monastics are quite different from those of worldly people. The four travelers only wish to climb the mountain’s peak, while the monastics are pursuing the peak of Buddhist understanding; the monastics seek to see through the worldly attachments, while the students only want to see the rising sun; when men and women picnic on the beach, the host engages in meditation. This contrast between movement and stillness highlights the different realms of monastics and worldly people. The next morning, the students leave the temple to continue their journey, and the young monk, sweeping at the door, just smiles and watches them leave, as if he understands the essence of the flower... "City of Sand" is the third episode of the "Story of the Island" TV series.
