In 1999, in the city of Fenxi, Shanxi Province, the cheerful and lively girl Shen Tao (played by Zhao Tao) oscillates between the miner Liangzi (played by Liang Jingdong) and the coal mine owner Zhang Jinsheng (played by Zhang Yi). A love triangle between one woman and two men cannot maintain a long-lasting balance. The friendship between Liangzi and Jinsheng collapses. During the time of Tao's marriage, some choose to go far away. In 2014, due to long-term work in the coal mine, Liangzi's health has reached an irreversible state. In his final days, he brings his wife and children back to his hometown. At this point, Shen Tao and Jinsheng have already divorced, and Jinsheng has taken their child to live in Shanghai. In middle age, they find themselves helplessly standing on the brink of life and death. In 2025, the English-only speaking Dao Le (played by Dong Zijian) feels a deep disconnect with his father but forms a close friendship with Chinese teacher Mia (played by Sylvia Chang).
