Francis (Eamonn Owens) lives in an unfortunate family, with a father who is an alcoholic and often physically abuses his weak and mentally unstable mother when drunk. Joey is Francis's only friend, and they often amuse themselves by teasing Philip (Andrew Fullerton). The harsh reality leads Francis to escape into the magical world of comics, filled with bizarre fantasies. His mother eventually has a mental breakdown and is sent to an asylum. Unable to endure his father's violence, Francis leaves his hometown for Berlin to make a living, only to find upon returning that his mother has chosen to commit suicide. Due to a prank, Francis is sent to a reform school, where he suffers inhuman treatment. It is his religious faith that helps him continue living. After leaving the reform school, Francis finds a job at a slaughterhouse.
