In 1940, Lei Feng (played by Chen Haijie) was born into a poor family in Wangcheng, Hunan. When he was five, his father, Lei Mingliang (played by Jin Yonglin), was brutally killed by Japanese soldiers. To survive, young Lei Feng herded cattle for a landlord, while his brother worked as an apprentice in a dye factory in town, eventually dying from poverty and illness. After his brother's death, Lei Feng worked while taking care of his younger brother, while their mother (played by Tao Huimin) relied on selling cigarettes and matches to make ends meet.
