The story takes place in 1970s America, where Ruth (Rooney Mara) and her boyfriend Bob (Casey Affleck) share a close relationship. Under the bright Texas sun, just when they believe this happy life will last, misfortune strikes. During an accident, Ruth accidentally shoots a police officer and faces a severe trial.
