In a town in Tokyo, there is a car repair shop called Suzuki, owned by Suzuki Taisuke (played by Masakazu Tamura), who leads a happy and harmonious life with his wife Tomoe (played by Hiroko Yakushimaru) and son Ippei. One day, they welcome Hoshino Ruko (played by Maki Horikita), who comes from the countryside to work in the big city. Upon arriving at the shop, Ruko is very disappointed as she had hopes of returning to a big company, but she humbly stays on to work. During her time there, Taisuke has some misunderstandings with Ruko, but after resolving their differences, the four of them become a family. On Christmas, Ruko receives a train ticket from the Suzuki family, allowing her to return home for the New Year, but she tearfully returns the ticket to Mr. Suzuki... Across from the Suzuki family lives a struggling writer named Chagawa (played by Hidetaka Yoshioka), who writes children's books for a third-rate magazine. The local tavern owner Hiromi (played by Koyuki) asks him to adopt an orphan named Junosuke, and upon discovering Junosuke is a loyal reader of his, Chagawa's attitude towards him changes significantly. Hiromi also develops feelings for his generosity, but unexpectedly, she leaves before their wedding. Junosuke really wants to find his mother, and at this moment, a wealthy man claiming to be his father wants to take him away. Although Chagawa is reluctant, he feels helpless until he sees a familiar figure ahead...
