In 1945, 20-year-old Yasukosaka Takamaru (played by Yoshiko Tanaka) escapes the war by taking a boat to her uncle Shigematatsu (played by Kazuo Kitamura). Accompanied by a blinding white light and a huge explosion, the black rain from hell falls from the sky, forcing Yasukosaka to undergo the baptism of death. Five years later, the Shigema couple takes Yasukosaka as their daughter, and the family lives a peaceful life in Kojima Village, Fukuyama City. The harm brought to ordinary people by the atomic bomb gradually becomes evident, as those exposed to the blinding light suffer from various illnesses, and normal people keep their distance from them. Those who have experienced the war firsthand carry immense trauma within, often losing their sanity and struggling to return to a normal life. The beautiful Yasukosaka witnesses the suffering and torment experienced by her loved ones and friends, and ultimately, the ghost of war starts to erode her life… This film is based on the novel of the same name by Masuji Ibuse and won several awards including Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Lighting, Best Score, and Best Supporting Actress at the 1990 Japanese Academy Awards; it also received special mentions for the Catholic Humanitarian Spirit Award and technical awards at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival.
