Yukio Kinugasa (Masahiro Motoki) is a somewhat famous writer who has been married to his wife Natsuko (Eri Fukatsu) for many years. Their relationship has long since shifted from the initial passion to a mundane existence. Despite Natsuko's consistent warmth and honesty in accommodating Yukio, he remains unmoved, responding with indifference and rudeness, simply because he has another woman in his heart, Fukunaga (Hana Kuroki). One day, while on a trip with her friend (Keiko Horiuchi), Natsuko's bus encounters an accident, and they tragically lose their lives. Upon hearing the news of his wife's death, Yukio feels no internal turmoil but pretends to be in sorrow on the surface. Following this, Yukio's life descends into chaos; his editor despises him, and Fukunaga leaves him. Eventually, one day, Natsuko's friend's husband approaches Yukio, asking him to help take care of his two children. During this process, Yukio gradually learns to confront his weaknesses and failures, ultimately rediscovering the meaning of life.
