Warden Bernadine Williams (played by Alfre Woodard) experiences an inner struggle between professional duty and personal ethics as she oversees executions. The death penalty has always been a controversial topic. Some believe it is a just response to certain crimes, while others argue it violates human rights and fundamental moral principles. When Bernadine forms an emotional connection with a young death row inmate, Anthony (played by Aldis Hodge), her feelings become more complicated. She may feel conflicted because she has a duty to enforce the law, but also an emotional connection to humanity. This raises an important question: can emotions and ethical responsibilities coexist? Bernadine is forced to reevaluate her professional and personal life, possibly needing to make difficult moral decisions. She must weigh the law, ethics, emotions, and moral principles in determining her actions.
