The sake brewer Wanbei (played by Nakamura Ganjiro) loses his wife and raises two daughters, Fumiko and Noriko (played by司叶子), while his daughter-in-law Akiko (played by Hara Setsuko) has been a widow for some time. A kind relative attempts to set her up with a match, but Akiko seems uninterested. In contrast, Wanbei's mindset remains quite active, frequently meeting with his former lover Sasaki. Wanbei and Sasaki's daughter, Yoshiko, has grown up, but this fashionable girl, dating an American boyfriend, is more concerned about gifts than whether Wanbei is her biological father... Fumiko is quite dissatisfied with her father's behavior but feels helpless. A young man, who has feelings for Noriko, goes to work in Sapporo, and they can only express their concerns through letters. As there seems to be no progress on the marriages of his daughter-in-law and daughters, Wanbei collapses due to a heart attack, but soon wakes up and hurriedly rushes to his lover's house again...
