Movies about World War II are a frequent topic in Polish cinema. In "How to be Loved," Has uses the war as a backdrop to tell the tragic love story of two ordinary people. The female lead, in her selfless devotion to love, ultimately becomes a burden to the man she deeply loves, in a sense ruining his life. All this takes place in the context of war, as the female lead says, at first thinking that life is just about what happens around her, later realizing that her whole country is connected to her. The male lead also remarks that we are all ordinary people caught up in war.
