After World War II, Grace (Nicole Kidman) raises her two children alone on a small island in Britain, patiently waiting for her husband to return from the battlefield. Her children are sensitive to light, and exposure will make them ill, so the curtains in their home are kept tightly drawn year-round. In this dark, old house, Grace welcomes three new servants. However, their arrival chills Grace’s heart—curtains are frequently opened, doors are opened without reason, the piano plays by itself, and her daughter claims to see strange men in the rooms. Grace becomes increasingly anxious, not understanding why these strange occurrences happen or why her husband has not returned. Ultimately, she realizes that all the terror actually stems from within herself, but by then, it is too late…
