The story takes place in the mid-Edo period of Japan, where the cold-hearted financial officer of the Sendai domain, Kayaba Moku (played by Ryuhei Matsuda), implements harsh tax measures, shifting the financial burden entirely onto farmers and merchants. Overwhelmed by the pressure, people either go bankrupt or flee with their families. The loss of household registrations does not awaken the ruling authorities; instead, it spreads the existing tax burdens onto those who remain, worsening the situation. Concerned about the future of his hometown, the sake brewer Yata-ya Juro (played by Takashi Abe) seeks out the town's self-proclaimed smartest man, Sugawara-ya Tokuheiji (played by Eita), to discuss strategies and formulate a plan to lend money at high interest to the domain lord, thus making a large profit. Afterward, Juro, his brother Asano-ya Junai (played by Sōta Matsuda), and a group of friends work together, aiming to gather funds, with the potential to secure up to 1,000 ryo in capital for loans. Conversely, if their scheme is exposed, the two face the fate of execution... This film is based on the story "Yata-ya Juro," featured in Michifumi Ideta's collection "Selfless Japanese," which is inspired by true events in Miyagi Prefecture.
