A father drives his two children away from the noisy city for a picnic in the wilderness. The cheerful sister (Jenny Agutter) and her brother do not expect their father to suddenly lose control in the wilderness, pulling out a gun and shooting at them. In the end, the father dies in the explosion of the car. The siblings have no choice but to carry their remaining belongings across the desolate plains. Under the scorching sun, they spend a night among the stones, and the next day, hungry and thirsty, they discover a small pond under a fruit tree. The resources of the pond quickly run out, and in despair, they encounter a native man (David Gulpilil) who has come to hunt. The native stays to help them find water and food, and the three continue their journey across the wilderness until they discover an abandoned cabin in the woods. While the brother and the native go to search for food, they unexpectedly find a road, while the native witnesses the scene of a white man shooting animals...
