Eliza (played by Uma Thurman) lives in a small apartment in Manhattan with her husband and two young children. Although Eliza has always wanted to be a professional writer, she finds herself unable to do so because of her young children and her husband’s work schedule, forcing her to become a full-time mom, writing only in the gaps between household chores. On the day of her daughter Karla's sixth birthday, Eliza starts shopping for the party early in the morning. However, who could have predicted the numerous mishaps on such an important day? As Eliza runs around for her daughter's birthday, she can't help but feel sad about her "helpless" and "tragic" life as a mother. Yet when she sees her daughter happy that night and her husband finally shows understanding, Eliza finally feels the unique joys of being a mother.
