Albert (played by Åke Grönberg) has bet all his fortune and life on the circus he has painstakingly managed. Despite the deteriorating business, he does not entertain thoughts of giving up; instead, he decides to organize a grand performance to uplift the morale of the troupe. Accompanied by his lover Anne (Harriet Andersson), Albert visits a man named Schuberg (Gunnar Björnstrand) in hopes of borrowing some costumes for the show. Albert also visits his long-separated wife Agda (Annika Tretow) and children, expressing a desire to stay home and spend his remaining years peacefully, only to be met with rejection. Shortly thereafter, he discovers an affair between Anne and his colleague Frans (Hasse Ekman). Fortunately, the circus performance is a success; although life is cruel, the days continue to pass slowly.
