Ma Shan (Jiang Wen) is an ordinary police officer in a remote town in southwest China. One night, after getting drunk at his sister's wedding, he is sent home by others. When he wakes up the next morning, he discovers that his service pistol, which he never parts with, is missing. Realizing that the thief could use the three bullets in the gun to commit murder, Ma Shan feels a chill run down his spine, suspecting everyone who attended his sister's wedding that night.
