Bryan (Michael B. Jordan) graduates from Harvard Law School and is running a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing legal assistance to death row inmates. With the help of Eva (Brie Larson), Bryan's noble vision takes root, and he acquires his own office and his first client. Walter (Jamie Foxx) has been sentenced to death despite having a strong alibi. Six years later, when Bryan meets Walter, he finds that his spirit has been shattered by the prolonged prison life. Bryan decides to help Walter appeal, but his passionate efforts are met with indifference from the newly elected prosecutor. Despite losing support, Bryan remains determined to overturn Walter's conviction.
