The story follows a crime novelist named Charles (Dan Stevens) who faces writer's block. He invites an eccentric mystic (Judi Dench) to perform a séance for inspiration, resulting in the accidental summoning of his ex-wife's (Leslie Mann) ghost, who wants to kill Charles so they can reunite in the afterlife. Meanwhile, his current wife Ruth (Isla Fisher) cannot see the ghost and is worried that her husband has completely lost his mind.
