Hammerfest, located on the coast of the Arctic Ocean, is the northernmost city in Norway. This small town experiences polar nights each year, where the sun remains hidden below the horizon, never to rise, and the city wanders between long nights and eternal dawns. Nils, a gas engineer from Germany, brings his wife Maria and son to this place in hopes of saving their crumbling family. However, the new environment seems to do little to improve their relationship. Nils works day and night and has an affair. Maria works as a night nurse in a hospice, while their son Markus, in the throes of youth, finds his relationship with new classmates becoming increasingly strained. One night, a sudden car accident gradually melts three cold hearts. The fragile relationship between husband and wife begins to change as they jointly bear the burden of the incident, completing an emotional journey from panic to escape, to guilt, hesitation, and confession, ultimately achieving redemption of their souls by telling the truth to the victims' parents.
