In 1990, it won the Best Film Award from the Japanese Film Quarterly. The film depicts the lives of the drama club members through the staging of Chekhov's play of the same name at a university, using only a few scenes to record their experiences. On the morning of the school's annual celebration in April, the private Oka Women’s Academy traditionally performs Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard." On that day, the actors gather in the performance lounge. Among them, the most striking is the captain, Yuko Shimizu, who is turning eighteen and has just permed her hair for the first time. The innocent girls are discussing how a third-year student, Noriko Sugiyama, who plays the servant Yasha, was caught smoking by a teacher yesterday. Everyone anxiously wonders if the performance will still go on as scheduled. Under the persuasion of the performance advisor, the atmosphere settles down. Under the direction of stage manager Kaori Shiramura, preparations begin in earnest. The main actress, Tomoyoko Kurata, feels a lack of confidence as this is her first time in the role and is extremely nervous. Yuko Shimizu, whom she admires, kindly encourages her. Noriko Sugiyama observes all of this with a complex mix of emotions. The performance finally begins, the curtain slowly rises, and the young girls walk steadily onto the stage.
