Habitual criminal Hi (played by Nicolas Cage) falls in love at first sight with prison guard Ed (played by Holly Hunter), and the two get married. Afterwards, Hi decides to change his ways and become a good person for his beloved wife. Ed, who loves children, discovers that she is unable to conceive, which makes her melancholic, and Hi feels heartbroken seeing her distress. When the wealthy tycoon Arizona (played by Trey Wilson) in town has quintuplets, Ed and Hi take the risk to steal a baby named Nathan Jr. from him. After finally having a child, Ed is very happy, but Hi gradually feels the pressure of being a father. The desperate tycoon, having lost his child, reports it to the police, but they show no interest in the case. At this moment, a muscular man claiming to be a "hellraiser" approaches the tycoon, assuring him that he can help find his son. Hi's home is a mess as two escaped prisoners come seeking refuge. They discover the baby's worth and kidnap him. Meanwhile, Hi’s boss, whom he has crossed, also finds out about the baby and uses it to coerce Hi into submission. In a critical situation, to protect his wife and child as well as the people he loves, Hi is forced to return to his former life of crime.
