"Kūkai" is a film directed by Jun'ya Sato, completed in 1984, which depicts the story of the scholar Kōbō Daishi, who traveled to Tang Dynasty China during Japan's Heian period. This film was made to commemorate the 1,150th anniversary of the death of this significant figure in Japanese cultural history. In his youth, Kūkai undertook a risky journey across the ocean to China in search of true teachings, studying esoteric Buddhism and calligraphy. Upon returning to Japan, he founded the Shingon school of esoteric Buddhism, enriching Japanese art. The production cost of the film was 1.2 billion yen, and it was filmed in China with the support of the Chinese government, making it a rare large-scale production at the time. After its release, "Kūkai" grossed over 3 billion yen at the Japanese box office, ranking seventh in the 1984 box office chart and achieving great success.
