Russell (played by Bruce Willis) is in his middle age, with a mediocre career and a blank emotional life. After being busy for most of his life, what he has achieved can only be described as "unremarkable." One day, by chance, Russell meets a boy who looks very familiar, and to his surprise, the boy is none other than himself at age 8 (played by Spencer Breslin). After much effort, Russell convinces the young Russell that he is him 32 years later. However, the young Russell is greatly disappointed to find out that he hasn't become the handsome pilot he had dreamed of, but rather grown into a lonely and downtrodden middle-aged man. To change his future, the young Russell decides to help his future self, and through their time together, Russell also emerges from his confusion and sees hope again.
