Filmed in 1967, it is the finest film to date about the great musician Bach. The title is derived from the novel of the same name by an English writer, and the dialogues and letters quoted in the film are taken from true documentary archives from Bach's lifetime. The film nearly gathers the elites of the music performance world at that time, such as Hanno Hart and August Wenzinger, possessing extremely high historical value. Unlike the chubby and robust Bach we usually see in portrait paintings, the character played by the renowned pianist and conductor Gustav Leonhardt appears slender and frail. After its release, the film received great acclaim from contemporary film critics.
