The British governess Anna arrives at a wealthy family's home in Madrid, Spain. The household consists of an elderly lady, three sons, and the wife and daughter of the second son. The elderly lady suffers from madness and recurring nightmares; the eldest son, José, is power-hungry and controls the household, obsessed with a military persona; the second son, Juan, is a womanizer who has an affair with a maid; the youngest son, Fernando, is taciturn and spends his time in austere meditation in a cave. Anna's arrival disrupts the seemingly peaceful life of the family, as all three men desire her, yet none succeed. Ultimately, the story leads to Anna being driven out, while the three brothers take the opportunity to satisfy their respective desires with her.
