The story takes place after the end of World War II. Antonia (played by Willeke van Ammelrooy) returns to her long-lost hometown with her daughter Danielle (played by Els Dottermans). Antonia's kind-hearted and charitable nature brings new hope to her war-torn home. She takes in a mentally disabled girl, Dee (played by Marina de Graaf), and a farmer, Bass (played by Jan Decleir), forming a special family—the Antonia family. A warm and close relationship binds these family members, who are not related by blood, yet conflicts that are hard to reconcile also exist among them. After becoming pregnant, Danielle gives birth to Teresa (played by Veerle van Overloop), who later suffers a tragic event at the hands of Peter (played by Filip Peeters). As time goes by, the Antonia family continues to grow, while Antonia's own life approaches its end.
